Beefonomics: Cattle Market Update – Trade Update

    Will Secor (August, 2026)
    Summary

This article examines recent changes in U.S. beef imports and exports and how they reflect domestic supply and demand conditions. Through the first half of 2026, beef exports declined by more than 15% compared with 2025, while imports increased by approximately 10%. These trends are driven by limited domestic beef supplies, strong U.S. consumer demand, and high beef prices. The article discusses how international trade helps meet domestic demand and explains why imports may remain elevated and exports relatively low until the U.S. cattle herd rebuilds. It provides insight into how global trade trends affect cattle markets and the beef industry.
