    Summary

    Farmers’ markets serve pivotal roles for small farmers and local food systems. The success of each is closely tied to the other. Knowledge of market failure and how it occurs is an important step in improving the viability of farmers’ markets and therefore, maintaining and expanding a marketing channel for small farmers, and enhancing community food systems.
